Raising Funds for K-9 Bear
The Hometown Foundation, Inc. is raising funds to cover the cost of the newest member of the Middletown Police K-9 Unit, K-9 Bear. K-9 Bear is a highly trained Black Labrador Retriever Service Dog. Bear was donated to the Middletown Police Department by the Manhattan, New York based non-profit organization, Puppies Behind Bars. Bear is an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) certified Service Dog and is trained to assist Police Officers, Firefighters, and Military Veterans who suffer from severe PTSD, anxiety, and other disorders as a result of exposure to trauma. Bear spent 20 months in training in maximum security prisons in New York, receiving training by dedicated prisoners (puppy raisers). Prior to his arrival at Middletown Police Department, Bear had over 10,000 hours of socialization in churches, bus stations, airports, malls, sports venues, grocery stores, schools, and other public events.
K-9 Bear is partnered with Officer Jay Bodell who serves as the Community Relations Officer for the Middletown Police Department. Bear’s primary role is Officer Wellness for Middletown Police Officers and surrounding agencies. He can also utilized to assist victims and witnesses of traumatic incidents. Bear’s favorite activity is interacting and engaging with the community. Bear is one of four service K-9s in the state of Connecticut who were all donated by Puppies Behind Bars.
The Middletown Police Department Service Dog Program is funded solely by public and private donations, and would not be possible without the efforts and support of The Hometown Foundation, Inc. The Foundation focuses on donating Police K-9s as well as equipping departments with necessary equipment and training assets. Our mission is to help serve those who serve our communities. Police K-9s are important to solving issues and preventing crime within towns and cities to create a safer tomorrow.
Police K-9 Units are an integral part of law enforcement and help make the communities safer. K-9 Bear serves as a liaison between law enforcement officers and the public. Police K-9s have proven to fill an important role in our police force’s work to build community relations as well as to deter and combat illegal activity.
