Raising Funds for K-9 Diesel

The Hometown Foundation, Inc. is raising funds to cover the cost of cancer medications and injections for K-9 Diesel. K-9 Diesel has been with the Rio Rancho Police Department for 8 years and was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer on October 8th. Due to his recent diagnosis, he was forced to retire from the Police Department but now has to receive treatment 3 times a week. His handler, Officer Jonathan Hickerson was putting his collar on him when he noticed a few lumps. He took him to the vet and the biopsy determined that he has lymphoma. K-9 Diesel will need to receive cancer treatment 3 times per week and the average cost will be $1,000 per month.

K-9 Diesel is half German Shepherd, half Belgian Malinois and is certified in patrol and narcotics. He has been partnered with Officer Hickerson for his entire life and career and the two have been inseparable. K-9 Diesel has numerous finds, tracks, and saves. His most notable find was when he successfully tracked $1.6 million worth of marijuana. K-9 Diesel was essential to the department and now it is our turn to help him.

Our mission is to help those who serve and who have served. K-9 Diesel dedicated his entire life to protect his community and the citizens of Rio Rancho. Now, in his time of need, we need to step up and assist him and his family. Police K-9s are important to solving issues and preventing crime within towns and cities to create a safer tomorrow.

K-9 Diesel was one of three K-9 Units at Rio Rancho Police Department and has been a prominent member in the community for numerous years. The K-9 Unit has been involved in community events, educating students within the school system about Police K-9s and their duties, and so much more. The K-9 Unit is utilized at least 2-3 times per week on call outs and they visit schools once a month to interact with the students and educators.

Police K-9 Units are an integral part of law enforcement and help make the communities safer. K-9 officers can apprehend suspects, detect drugs and explosives, locate missing people, and even help find crime scene evidence.  Police K-9s have proven to fill an important role in our police force’s work to build community relations as well as to deter and combat illegal activity.
